As one of the most prestigious events in the sector, the annual British Renewable Energy Association Awards is a significant event in the calendar of those in the UK renewable energy industry. The awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and companies who have made a significant difference or contribution to the progression of renewable energy.

In its 11th year, the 2016 REA awards were announced from the Lancaster Ballroom of the Savoy Hotel in London last week, hosted by journalist and TV presenter Bill Turnbull. Ecovision were amongst a short selection of finalists who attended the event, with notable finalists including British energy company Good Energy, retailer Marks & Spencer and cheese maker Wyke Farms.

Chief Executive of the REA, Dr. Nina Skorupska CBE, who opened the event, commented “The extraordinary people, projects, and organisations highlighted here demonstrate the adaptability and perseverance of this industry. It was wonderful to honour those that have done so much to further the industry’s aims of creating a more affordable, accessible, and decarbonised energy system.”

Ecovision were finalists in the ‘Innovation’ category, which is sponsored by Energy 2016. This recognised the Ecovision installation of a revolutionary 2MW GSHP, which now provides heat to a 16 acre glasshouse greenhouse growing plants for the horticulture sector.  Historically heat pumps have been restricted to a smaller scale, of approximately 500kW, and have required boreholes. With 95,000m of horizontal collector array, this installation will transform renewable heating with its size and capabilities. This innovation shows the true capabilities of heat pumps within commercial operations, no longer limited by size or scale.

The positive impact a GSHP of this scale will have on the environment will be extensive. In the first year, the amount of carbon produced by the business will be reduced by an estimated 858 tonnes. This is equivalent to a commercial passenger plane flying around the world approximately 186 times.

Ecovision would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in undertaking a successful and innovative installation which has been recognised in this prestigious finalist status. We’d also like to thank the Renewable Energy Association for a fantastic event and to congratulate all other finalists.

We look forward to working further with REA sponsor Energy 2016 and joining them at the Energy 2016 exhibition later this year.
