Treago Castle is a Grade II listed, fortified manor house dating back to the 1500’s. The Estate has a number of cottages and now operates as a successful rental business. The owners were conscious that the oil bills for the Castle were very high, and wanted to install a renewable alternative that would maintain the castle at a constant temperature of 18 degrees centigrade to keep the damp at bay and to ensure a comfortable living temperature.

Ecovision was asked to provide a solution and proposed using the castle’s giant compost bins as a source of heat. Pipes were inserted into the walls and base of the bins to exploit the considerable heat released during the rotting processes, as well as in the ground around the bins. The heat was fed to a 40 kW ground source heat pump and was then piped to the house. The system was retro-fitted to the existing internal heating system. The owners are very pleased with the performance of the system and have made considerable savings.
