Under current Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016, a waste management centre can incinerate Grade A, B and C waste wood, in turn generating heat to dry other waste material on site.

The on-site combustion of 1,000’s of tonnes of waste wood removes the costs of disposing of the waste wood from site but also generates heat to dry other waste materials. The drying process typically remove 20% of moisture per tonne dried, similarly reducing the cost of transporting and landfilling the dried waste by the same percentage.

Investors in Waste2Heat will also benefit from the government backed grant scheme, the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). The generation of ‘process heat for drying’ using wood waste material is eligible for quarterly cash payments, guaranteed under government legislation, paid for a period of 20 years.

What Can You Expect?

A basic Waste2Heat system will incinerate over 2,500 tonnes of waste wood per annum, and has been found to typically provide a cost benefit of over £100 per tonne combusted, an annual cost reduction of £150,000 in waste wood disposal costs plus reduced transport and landfill costs provided by the moisture content reduction of over £350,000. A Waste2Heat system will additionally generate RHI payments of circa £200,000 per annum.

How am I paid the RHI?
There is a heat meter between the boiler and the drying unit recording the kW/hrs (heat) generated and used. You submit your meter readings quarterly which are paid to you by BACS.
Is the RHI guaranteed, can it change?
When your system has been installed it is registered on to the Non Domestic RHI scheme and you are locked in on the current tariff which is index linked to protect against inflation. The scheme is government bonded for a 20 year period.
Will I need a wood chipper and a shredder?
No, fuel can be prodced with a slow speed shredder with an over band magnet ideally, but also with a high speed shredder when pre-crushed.
What maintenance is required?
There are daily and weekly tasks that are mainly visual checks, plus a weekly requirement to empty the ash bins. Your renewable energy partner should be engaged under contract to carry out an annual main service and system check. A true industrial class biomass boiler requires a service every 8,000 running hours or every 12 months, whichever is soonest. Biomass boilers requiring multiple services per annum should be considered commercial class and therefore questionable for waste wood use.
What do we do with the ash?
The ash can be mixed in with aggregates, and also used in the making of concrete blocks.
What is the time frame for installation?
Typically from receiving a signed order and initial deposit the Waste2Heat system will be installed and commissioned as operable within 12-16 weeks.
What materials can I dry?
Waste can be dried to create a product
Examples:
• Wood chip – to produce a low moisture content, high calorific value fuel
• Wood chip or paper pulp for animal bedding
• RDF and MRF
• Soil to create a better product
• Sawdust for making wood pellets
• Logs for kiln dried logs as wood fuel
