Solar energy is produced all year round and we currently harness very little of this renewable source. Solar thermal systems collect this energy and transform it efficiently and effectively into hot water. This hot water can then be stored in a cylinder and used by you when you need it whether it is for baths and showers, through your heating system, or to heat a swimming pool.
There are three main components that make up a solar thermal system:
The solar thermal collector. This typically sits on the roof of a property (or can be free-standing) and it collects the radiation produced by the sun. A heat transfer fluid runs through the collector, absorbing the suns heat and the temperature of the fluid is significantly raised.
The heat transfer fluid then passes through pipework to the heat transfer system. The heat from the heat transfer fluid is then transferred to the hot water supply. This is highly versatile and can be used for a variety of applications from small appartments to large commercial installations.
Energy from the heat transfer fluid is transferred to the stored water via a coil heat exchanger. The cylinder has a suplementary heat source to provide back up for times when insufficient solar energy is available.
