How it works: The Ground Source Heat Pump

The Energy stored in the Earth

The earth has the natural ability to absorb and store heat from the sun as well as heat from within the earth.

In the UK, if you dig down just a few feet, you will discover an average temperature of a fairly constant 8°C to 12°C. This trapped energy is a vast reserve of low grade heat waiting to be used. Consider the earth as a large, rechargeable battery storing thermal energy that is effectively recharged via ground water (rainfall) or during the warmer summer months.

How does a heat pump collect heat from the ground?

EcoVision ground source heat pumps use a series of high density polyethylene coil or loop collectors to collect the heat from the solar energy stored there. Collectors can be buried horizontally at a depth of 1 - 2 metres using a standard earth excavator. The size of the ground area required varies with the location, the property and the output required.

Alternatively, where less ground area is available, boreholes can be drilled up to a depth of 150m where the pipes can benefit from more constant ground temperatures.

Energy for space heating and hot water preparation is drawn from the soil of your garden using ground probes or collectors.

How is the heat transferred from the ground to the heat pump?

A mixture of water and an environmentally friendly anti-freeze solution is used as a process medium, circulating through the closed loop, absorbing thermal energy from the earth and carrying it to the heat pump.

How is this heat energy used by the heat pump?

Heat pumps operate on the same principles as a domestic fridge: the cold is recycled and the heat retained and converted into high-grade heat to be released in the home through underfloor heating, radiators and into the hot water tank.

Once a ground source heat pump is installed, there are no external fans and no visible external equipment. The system is quiet in operation, very safe and requires little, if any, maintenance.

The EcoVision range of ground source heat pumps includes single and three phase units with heating capacities from 5 to 130kW.
