EcoVision install Dimplex's first UK Water Source Heat Pump

22nd November 2007

As the cold of winter sets in around the UK, an old trout farm near Wotton-under-edge in Gloucestershire will soon become the country’s first installation of a Dimplex heating system that warms buildings by using heat stored in groundwater.

The water source heat pump which has been designed and is being installed by Gloucestershire based EcoVision, will take low grade heat from a natural water source and convert it to heat the old farm’s offices via radiators and underfloor heating.

Reduced operating costs

Proprietor Nick Read said: “We have been interested in heat pump technology for many years and are more than happy that we can now use this 'green' system for our buildings. It has been a long held ambition and our tenants will benefit from the much reduced operating costs.”

“Energy costs have risen sharply and are only going in one direction. We must all seek solutions to limit our heating costs and to reduce our environmental footprint. This heat pump system does just that. When we needed to source a heat pump, we were delighted to find a local company to take on the work. Better still, EcoVision were offering us a Dimplex product with the back up of many years experience in heat pumps and sound engineering.”

“The heat pump will provide space heating for the offices in what was once our fish processing factory. This has been re-built to modern standards of insulation for use by a young local business, Taste Connection Ltd. We intend that our whole site will be as eco-friendly as we can possibly make it. This heat pump installation is one part of that plan.”

UK's widest range of heat pumps

The water source heat pump is part of a series of heat pumps which have had thousands of installations throughout mainland Europe and which are now making their way around the UK. As well as extracting thermal energy from groundwater, other pumps in the range can extract heat from the earth all year round or even just from the ambient air. The heat pump will then raise this to a temperature suitable for heating domestic and commercial properties.

EcoVision, the company that has designed, supplied and installed the system is very positive about the part that heat pumps will have to play in UK homes.

Peter Randall, EcoVision Managing Director said: “Heat pumps are among the most efficient heating and hot water systems available today. Our clients can expect up to 75% of the energy needed for heating to come from the environment and this goes a long way to explaining the new found UK popularity of this tried and tested form of heating.”

“Dimplex has been producing heat pumps for 30 years now and having become well established in countries such as Germany and France, this country is now starting to embrace the technology.”

“Compared to conventional heating systems heat pumps have very low running costs, at about 50% of the cost of running oil, and they have a reliable life span in excess of 25 years. Typically they do cost more to install but you would expect to get your money back within 5 -7 years and then you would still be paying just half your current heating cost. In today’s world of spiralling oil prices and strategically unreliable gas supplies, heat pumps offer a sustainable and renewable cost effective alternative.”

A warm future

Staff at the old trout farm will soon be savouring this very modern and innovative heating experience, which will be of particular use during the cold months ahead.
