A heating installation company is urging charities to make use of grants that allow them to install low-carbon heating systems free of charge.
Ground source heat pumps use heat stored in the earth. They can cut energy costs by 60 per cent, but the heating systems cost about £30,000 to install for voluntary and public sector projects.
But heating company EcoVision said that many charities were not aware that 50 per cent of the cost can be covered by the department for Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) as part of its Low Carbon Buildings Programme Phase 2. The firm said that charities could apply to the Big Lottery Fund's Community Sustainable Energy Fund (CSEP) to cover the remaining 50 per cent.
The company has been running for 18 months but so far only three charities – one private school and two village halls – have taken up the offer.
