How Ground Source Heat Pumps Work

Pipes are buried beneath the ground, either vertically using boreholes or horizontally using trenches. These pipes are filled with a special mix of water and food-grade anti-freeze which is the heat transport fluid.

The fluid extracts heat from the ground and releases it into your property at a higher temperature for space heating or to produce hot water.

The pressure of the fluid is raised by a compressor, which raises the fluid’s temperature and this heat is extracted through a heat exchanger for you to use. The pressure of the refrigerant is then lowered via an expansion valve and is then ready to start the process again.

Heat Pumps Are Extremely Efficient

The beauty of heat pumps is that they are extremely efficient, require very little maintenance and have a life expectancy of 20-40 years.

Ground source heat pumps are quiet, maintenance needs and costs are negligible and there are no visible external units. Ground source heat pumps can be installed in existing properties, and are recommended for new builds and larger homes or business/community use premises.

Ground source heat pumps work all year round as, at just 1m below the surface the earth provides enough heat to operate a heat pump and at 15m below the surface there is a constant temperature of 10oC Once installed and operating, you can expect to reduce your fuel bills by 40% - 70%.
