An air source heat pump draws in air from outside your property and raises the temperature of that air to release energy which turns into heat. A heat exchanger transfers the energy from the air to a liquid refrigerant, which has a low boiling point which in turn evaporates and passes through a closed system.
Just as in a refrigerator, a compressor, condenser, expansion valve and evaporator are used to change states of the refrigerant between a cold liquid and a hot gas.
When the liquid refrigerant at a low temperature passes through the outdoor evaporator heat exchanger coils, ambient heat is used to cause the liquid to boil. This boiling process amasses energy as latent heat.
The vapor is then drawn into a compressor which boosts the temperature of the vapor. This vapor enters the condenser heat exchanger coils where it transfers heat to your water delivery system.
The refrigerant is then cooled and the pressure reduces via an expansion valve and the whole process starts again.
The hot water that is produced via the heat pump can be used for space heating via under floor heating, low temperature radiators or fan coils and it can be used to produce hot water in the range of 60-65o for all uses.
