residential Case Study Air Source heat pump replaces oil system in town centre

1930s semi-detached house in Cheltenham

Key Points:

  • 68% reduction in bills
  • £1,900 installation grant
  • 3 years payback
Mr. and Mrs.Potts and their two children live in a traditional semi-detached three bedroom townhouse. It has loft and cavity wall insulation, though at the time of installation, it didn’t have double glazing. They were quoted £3,750 to replace their existing oil boiler.

They approached us to give them a quote, specifying that whatever system we recommended would need to integrate with their existing radiators. After assessing the property, Ecovision Systems recommended the installation of a 14kW Mitsubishi air source heat pump. The local planning authority were uncertain of whether there would be any planning concerns. We liaised with them to ensure there were no issues.

The cost of the installation was £9,500. Ecovision‘s ’ grant advisers helped the Potts to secure £1,900 worth of grants towards the cost of installation.

After allowing for grants, the cost of installing the heat pump was £4,400 more than the cost of installing an orthodox oil boiler. The extra cost of installing a heat pump will be recouped in 3 years. After 3 years, the Potts will save a clear £950 per year on thier heating and hot water costs. More if the cost of oil continues to rise (a virtual certainty).
