Around 1.5 million homes currently depend on heating oil in the UK. Most of these homes are in rural areas, off the gas grid.

Ground Source and Air Source Heat Pumps are the technology of choice for future heating systems. These will displace existing oil fired central systems in the process. By 2017, it is projected that ground and air source heat pumps will have overtaken heating oil. Oil fired central heating systems are set to all but disappear by 2025.

DECC has announced that the FIT rate for Solar PV systems exceeding 50kW will drop from May 1st 2013.

The cutoff off date is for Eligible Installations with an Eligibility Date on or after 1 May 2013 and before 1 July 2013 when they are likely to drop again

Next year will see the roll out of the Renewable Heat Incentive Tariff for domestic Air Source Heat Pumps. DECC has issued a statement outlining the proposed range of payments, we have taken the average rate of 9.2 and created the Heat Pump Calculator that you can find on the homepage.

From 1 November the FiT rate for residential installations up to 4kW will be cut, 4kW is typically a 16 panel system. It will also be cut for systems between 4kW-10kW. Commercial installs (10-50kW) also face a reduction.   The new FiT rates will apply for eligible solar PV installations from 1 November 2012 to 31 January 2013 when it will be cut again. Those systems installed before 1 November will receive the 16p rate for 20 years.

Next week Southern Electric owner SSE will increase gas prices by 9 per cent. British Gas has also warned it may have to increase bills by an average of £130 before winter. This will take the average family’s dual fuel bill to a record high of around £1,400. Industry experts warn that it is inevitable that all of the major providers – British Gas, EDF, SSE, E.ON, Npower and Scottish Power – will announce a hike in their prices.

Proposals for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) have today been published by the Dept. for Energy & Climate Change (DECC). Key proposals within the consultation are:

1. Indicative tariff ranges for air source heat pumps 6.9 - 11.5p/kWh
2. Indicative tariff ranges for ground source heat pumps 12.5 - 17.3p/kWh
3. Homeowners will receive payments over seven years for each unit of heat expected to be produced, whether it is actually generated or not.

From the 1st August the Feed-in-Tariff's timespan is also being reduced from 25 to 20 years for new solar installations. The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal bid by the Department of Energy and Climate Change over cuts to the Feed-in Tariff scheme for solar PV.

The Court of Appeal today said that the High Court's ruling, that Decc's attempt to cut the subsidies before the end of its consultation had been unlawful, must stand. That means Decc will have to follow the contingency plan it laid before parliament last week to allow the full 43p/kWh for installations completed by 3 March.

A Conference Centre in Worcestershire has just received some excellent news. News from DECC released 31/10/11 Tariffs have been slashed in a surprising and unwelcome move by the Government today. The date for the changes to be implemented has now been set as 12/12/11.
